Abel Tasman National Park

Abel Tasman was a Dutch explorer who was actually the first European to discover New Zealand in 1642.  He was met by some hostile Maori warriors and decided to sail away.  The Dutch named the island Nieuw Zeeland.  The park is located in the northwest corner of New Zealand's South Island.  It offers a lot of recreation opportunities for New Zealanders - kayaking, sailing, hiking, horseback riding, etc.
I picked the sailing-hiking combo - half-day of sailing and about 4 hours of hiking (kiwis call it tramping) back to our starting point.  We had 16 people on the sailboat.  We had a leisure sailing pace on a beautiful morning.  After sailing a few hours we hiked back to Marahau, which is where we were spending the night.  This is a very well-maintained trail, with occasional beautiful views of the beach and ocean.  We spent the night at a camper park which also has a few cabins.  Most of us stayed in the cabins with some staying in tents.  The cabins are nice but they don't have any heat in them so it was cold at night.  We have a common kitchen and showers and bathrooms.   This is almost like camping but for some of us, staying in cabins.
