Holy Toledo!

I am glad we went to Toledo.  It was only an hour from Madrid.  We could've taken the train there but we went with a bus company that took us there and brought us back to Madrid.  It costs us €25 each.

The bus took us to the bottom of the hill.  We took a series of escalators to the main part of town.  Here we took a mini-tram around the city for a tour.  It was a quick and informative overview of the city.  It took us to places where it would've been difficult or take too long for us to walk to.  It's a beautiful city with a lot of history and culture.  Sitting on top of the hill is the Alcazar, a fortress that was once used as a palace.  Another famous building is the Cathedral of Toledo, built in the 13th century.  It was a beautiful walk through the narrow streets.  There were many tourist shops and restaurants.

Historically, Toledo has been tolerant of other religious groups, including Muslims and Jews.  Jews thrived here during the city's earliest times.  It was mentioned in Rick Steve's book on "Spain" that the expression Holy Toledo! came from Sephardic Jews who eventually migrated to America.  To them Toledo was the holiest Jewish city in Europe.
